Nowadays, Nurse Practitioner’s demand are increasing since new doctors mostly choose specialties than primary or family care. Of course that make nurse practitioner salary is higher than registered nurse.

That’s why U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a growth of around 19% in this field by 2020, well above the national average.

There are two main reasons that could explain why nurse practitioners will be in high demand, one of the reasons is due to the expanded insurance coverage as well as the aging of the population.

The increase of aging population, in 2015 the aging population is 48.2 million, and in 2030 is estimated around 74 million. Meanwhile between 2010 and 2016, 20 million American have gained health insurance coverage under the ACA.

The other reasons is like its mentioned above, the number of primary care physicians is decreasing. The national demand for Primary Care Physicians is 224,780 meanwhile the national supply for Primary Care Physicians is 216,580. So based on that, the shortage is 8,200.

But also there are other reasons nurse practitioner will be high on demand, one of the reasons is the job satisfaction is relatively high. 92% of nurse practitioners would encourage other nurses to become nurse practitioners.

And the other reason is that there is a research shows that nurse practitioners provide care equal to better than physicians, and also at a lower cost.

Nurse Practitioner usually nurses that started as Registered Nurse then took advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), like Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited school. After earning an advanced degree, they take a national certification exam that are must recertify every five years.

Nurse practitioners had to have hundreds of hours of clinical practice. In recertification, nurse practitioners may require 1.000 hours of clinical practice plus 75 hours of continuing education, or 150 hours of continuing education. Nurse practitioner salary is also different based on the type of employer they work for. Here is the BLS reports based in that matter:

  • General medical and surgical hospitals: $111,850
  • Outpatient care centers: $111,690
  • Offices of other health practitioners: $106,670
  • Offices of physicians: $105,730
  • Colleges, universities, and professional schools: $100,040

Based on those data above, nurse practitioners are more likely to have slightly higher salary if compared to other job related to healthcare department, like registered nurse, medical and health service manager, nurse midwife, physician’s assistant, and also nurse anesthetist.

The median salary for nurse practitioners is $103,880, for registered nurse is $70,000, medical and health services manager $98,350, nurse midwife $100,590, physician’s assistant $104,860, and nurse anesthetist $165,120. So as you can see the only healthcare job that’s mentioned above that have higher salary than nurse practitioner are nurse anesthetist.

Demand for Nurse Practitioner Based on States

Currently the demand and supply of nurse practitioners are in line, at 57,330. So the need of nurse practitioner meet with the amount of nurse practitioner that’s available at this moment.

But Bureau of Labor Statistics, using Projections Central tool, predicts that demand of nurse practitioner in every state on U.S. will increase between 2014 and 2024. As written above, several factors influenced the demand of nurse practitioners. Those factors made job growth will increase.

Beside Bureau for Labor Statistics (BLS), the prediction of the increase of nurse practitioners’ demand is also predicted by several organizations, such as American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (NCHWA), and Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). BLS on October 2017 predicted that between 2016 and 2026, nurse practitioners opening nationwide would increase 36%. BLS projected 56,000 new nurse practitioners’ jobs would be created, based in 155,500 nurse practitioners that are working in 2016. So the total for nurse practitioners jobs in 2026 is estimated 211,500 jobs.

NCHE also had estimated the increase demand of nurse practitioners that would happen in 2025, NCHE estimated that the South area of the country will have the greatest demand for nurse practitioners in general and family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, and geriatrics in 2025. The second place will be in the west, followed by midwest, and the last one is the northeast.

But the newest estimation can be seen on Occupational Outlook Handbook Bureau of Labor Statistics. It said that the employment of nurse practitioners is projected to increase with approximately 62,000 jobs being added from 2018 to 2028. The increase is around 26%.

Based data above, in California 4,200 jobs for nurse practitioners were created. That’s the highest amount compared to all the regions. And the lowest jobs created for nurse practitioners is at North Carolina. Those data based on the number of jobs created.

And by percentage, there are two regions that shares the same percentage. Those regions are Georgia and Nevada, that share 52,7%. The lowest percentage is at North Dakota that’s had 40%.

There’s also a growing movement in primary care, from the patient-centered care switch to team-based. Obviously the patient-centered care, there’s one practitioners establishes exclusive one-on-one relationship with a patient. This exclusive relationship facilitate positive health outcomes.

And in team-based primary care, there are two or more practitioners that are working together as a team. This method also establishes relationship in order to create positive outcomes for the patient.

There are plus and minus in both methods, but recently the team-based primary care are increased significantly. The reason is because the more practitioners involves would bring more positive and solid outcomes for the patient. Based on that fact, so more nurse practitioners will be needed for their interpersonal skills and cost-effectiveness of their employment.
